Corporal Composition and Characteristics of Carcass of Araucano Creole Lambs International Journal of Morphology
Bravo,Silvana; Fabres,Macarena; Schnettler,Berta; Sepúlveda,Néstor.
Once livestock is slaughtered the carcass of body obtained represents the main commercial product, and is valued in terms of quality. The aim of this work was to characterize and evaluate the carcasses of Araucano creole lambs. Thirteen Araucano lambs were slaughtered at 221±15 days of age weighing 32±2 Kg. The hot carcass was weighed and after 24 hours at 4C the cold carcass was weighed. The characteristics of conformation, fat cover and regional composition of the carcass were evaluated according to Chilean regulation standards. The tissue composition of the back was also determined, in its three components (muscle, bone and fat). The commercial yield of the carcass was 51.14% and losses due to dehydration of the carcass were recorded at 3%. The...

Importance of origin in rice purchasing decisions in Talca and Temuco, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Schnettler,Berta; Ruiz,Danilo; Sepúlveda,Oriana; Sepúlveda,José; Denegri,Marianela.
Considering the increase in imports of forestry, farming and livestock products to Chile, the existence of different consumer segments was evaluated according to the relative importance of origin in decisions to purchase rice in Talca and Temuco in central-southern Chile. With this purpose, a direct survey was administered to 800 consumers, 400 in Talca (Maule Region) and 400 in Temuco (Araucania Region). Using a conjoint analysis and hierarchical clustering, five market segments were distinguished. The largest group (35.4%) gave great importance to the origin of the rice. The second largest group (25.1%) gave greater relevance to the packaging. For the third and fourth largest groups (15.4 and 12.5%, respectively), the cost of the product was the most...

Perceived quality in fresh peaches: an approach through structural equation modeling Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Mora,Marcos; Espinoza,Jacqueline; Schnettler,Berta; Echeverría,Gemma; Predieri,Stefano; Infante,Rodrigo.
The quality requirements that consumers consider in their decision to purchase fresh fruit have garnered a great deal of attention from the actors in the fresh fruit productivity chain. This study seeks to identify attributes that could explain how a consumer of fresh peaches perceives quality. The focus on the peach was because of the limited knowledge of the signs of quality that the consumer is seeking in this fruit. As a result, the objective was to produce a model that explains the perception of the quality of fresh peaches by Spanish consumers. A theoretical model was created that explains quality using a set of intrinsic and extrinsic attributes. The information was from a survey of closed questions administered in person to a non-probabilistic...

Perception of risk sources by chilean blueberry producers Rev. Bras. Frutic.
Lobos,Germán; Schnettler,Berta; Mena,Carlos; Ormazábal,Yony; Cantillana,Juan Carlos; Retamales,Jorge Borrar.
Abstract The biological and environmental nature of the agricultural production implies that growers operate in an environment of greater risk as compared to other economic activities. This has implications on the manner in which the growers can manage the risks inherent to their activity, which depends on how they perceive the risks and on the degree of aversion to risk. The main objective of this study was to learn about the perception of the main sources of risk that blueberry growers face in the Maule Region, Chile. This Region has about 25% of the planted area of this species in Chile. We used information from questionnaires implemented in 124 fields which considered two independent groups of growers: 48 owners and 76 managers. A scale of Importance...

Preference for oils with different types of genetic modifcations in Temuco, Araucanía Region, Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Schnettler,Berta; González,Abel; Avila,Richard; Miranda,Horacio; Sepúlveda,José; Denegri,Marianela.
Considering that attitudes towards biotechnology depend on the type of modifcation used, a study was performed to determine the importance of the type of Genetic Modifcation (GM) in preferences for oil purchased by consumers in Temuco (Araucanía Region, Chile) and the existence of different market segments using a survey of 400 people. A conjoint analysis demonstrated that the type of GM (70.3%) was more important than the price of the oil (29.7%). Four segments were distinguished using an analysis of hierarchical conglomerates, but the type of GM was the most important factor in all segments. Two groups preferred oil without GM and oil with GM that reduces the use of pesticides and rejected oil with GM that increases calcium content; the larger of these...

Preferences for sunflower oil produced conventionally, produced with nanotechnology or genetically modified in the Araucanía Region of Chile Ciencia e Investigación Agraria
Schnettler,Berta; Crisóstomo,Gloria; Mills,Natally; Miranda,Horacio; Mora,Marcos; Lobos,Germán; Grunert,Klaus G.
In light of the increasing use of nanotechnology in food production, consumer acceptance of sunflower oil produced with nanotechnology or from genetically modified (GM) plants and the conventionally produced raw materials available in Temuco (Araucanía Region, Chile), market segments were differentiated with respect to their acceptance of nanotechnology and characterized according to their sociodemographic characteristics and food neophobia level. To achieve this aim, a survey was administered to 400 people. Using a conjoint analysis, the brand (33.6%) and production system (32.6%) were determined to be more important than the price (19.2%) and health certification (14.6%); national brands, produced conventionally with a health certification seal and sold...
